Richmond is president of Humboldt
State University. Prior to his appointment in 2002, he had a distinguished career as a faculty
member, researcher in evolutionary biology and academic administrator. He was provost of Iowa State
University from 1999-2002; provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at State

Soroosh Sorooshian
Distinguished Professor and Director, Center for
Hydrometeorology & Remote Sensing (CHRS), UC Irvine
Dr. Sorooshian’s research focuses on surface
hydrology, primarily in the area of rainfallrunoff modeling. He has devoted much of his effort to
model identification and calibration issues and has developed special estimation criteria to account
for the uncertainties of calibration data. He also consults on problems related to surface hydrology
and flood forecasting. Dr. Sorooshian is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE);
Past-President of AGU’s Hydrology Section; NOAA Science Advisory Board; and U.S. Member of the
Hydrology Commission for WMO. He has served on numerous advisory committees, including those of NRC,
NASA, NOAA, NSF, EPA, and UNESCO.
S. Pete Worden, Director, NASA Ames Research Center
Prior to
becoming Director, Dr. Worden was a Research Professor of Astronomy, Optical Sciences and Planetary
Sciences at the University of Arizona where his primary research direction was the development of
large space optics for national security and scientific purposes and nearearth asteroids.
Additionally he worked on topics related to space exploration and solar-type activity in nearby
stars. He is a recognized expert on space issues - both civil and military. In addition to his
former position with the University of Arizona, Dr. Worden served as a consultant to the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on space-related issues.
Kathy Yelick, Director, National
Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Katherine
Yelick received her Bachelors (1985), Masters (1985), and PhD (1991) degrees in Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research
interests include parallel computing, memory hierarchy optimizations, programming languages and
compilers.
