October 15, 2009
Carol Tomlinson-Keasey, former CCST Board member and founding Chancellor of UC Merced, passed away on October 10 after a lengthy battle with
breast cancer. She was 66.
"Carol was a strong and capable advocate for UC Merced and a good friend to CCST," said CCST Executive Director Susan Hackwood.
"This is sad news."
Tomlinson-Keasey stepped down from her post at Merced and from CCST in 2006. Before her appointment as Chancellor, she was the Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives at
the Office of the President of the UC system. In this position, she served as the Senior Associate
to the President for the 10th campus, helped launch the California Virtual University and planned
the academic strategy and building for the UC Center in Washington.
Dr. Tomlinson-Keasey received her B.A. from Pennsylvania State University, her
M.S. from Iowa State University majoring in Psychology, and her Ph.D. from the University of
California at Berkeley in Developmental Psychology. She has also studied at the Institute of
Behavioral Genetics at the University of Colorado.
As a
scholar, she has authored and co-authored numerous books and dozens of articles dealing with
cognitive development, how gifted children realize their cognitive potential, and with the career
development of women.
