Meyer is the Principal of J. A. Meyer Associates, consulting in the management of technology, emphasizing the business processes and technology programs necessary to support the corporation's strategies and business unit's operations. He is the former President of Chevron Research and Technology Company, 1964-1993. Meyer was appointed adjunct professor of chemical engineering at UC Davis in 1997.
He received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1995.
