Combined, California's universities, federal laboratories, technical institutes, and public and
private industries are home to some of the world's greatest scientists and technical expertise. The
CCST Senior Fellows represent an impressive network of scientific and other experts that serve as a
significant resource to the state. CCST's Senior Fellows serve to better link academic, government
and industry expertise to policymakers in an accessible manner, and to improve the use of science in
policymaking.
CCST Senior Fellows include five Nobel Laureates: David Baltimore, President Emeritus and
the Robert Andrews Millikan Professor of Biology, California Institute of Technology (1975 Nobel
Prize in Physiology or Medicine); J. Michael Bishop, M.D., Chancellor and University
Professor, University of California, San Francisco (1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine);
Steven Chu, Former Director, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and appointed U.S.
Secretary of Energy (1997 Nobel Prize in Physics); Burton Richter, Paul Pigott Professor of
Physical Sciences, and Director Emeritus of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Stanford
University (1976 Nobel Prize in Physics); and F. Sherwood Rowland, Donald Bren Research
Professor of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine (1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry).
Nine CCST Senior Fellows are recipients of the National Medal of Science (the nation's highest
scientific honor), and two are National Medal of Technology recipients. Many of CCST's Senior
Fellows serve on National Research Council committees, or are members of the National Academy of
Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, or the Institute of Medicine.
Through CCST, the state's major technical institutes, research laboratories, private sector
firms, and academic institutions are working together to better unlock and leverage their
technological and scientific expertise for the betterment of the state, its citizenry, and the
economy. This unique collaborative is positioned to serve as the catalyst for an effort to extend
the expertise of the institutions to address select issues, initiatives and opportunities posed by
government and, ultimately, private sector clients.
In addition to relying on the Senior Fellows' significant expertise for a variety of projects,
CCST indexes and maintains interests and availability data as a resource to state and local
institutions. CCST Senior Fellows can assist public and private institutions address key science and
technology issues and problems facing government and industry, particularly clustered around the
four focus areas of CCST: the environment, education, the economy and government.
