Since 1975, Dr. Madia has been a leader in research and research management. His experience spans the full technology development process - from basic research and development to deployment and commercialization of new products. Bill is currently responsible for the governance and oversight of the DOE's Stanford Linear Accelerator Center at Stanford University where he chairs its Board of Overseers.

Previously, he was the Executive Vice President for Laboratory Operations at Battelle, responsible for the management and operations of 6 DOE National Laboratories and one Homeland Security National Laboratory. During his 33-year tenure at Battelle, Bill was Laboratory Director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), serving also as CEO of the laboratory contractor, UT-Battelle, LLC. In addition to completion of the $1.4 billion Spallation Neutron Source project, Bill's agenda for ORNL's 3,800 employees was built around rebuilding the laboratory's scientific programs as well as the laboratory's research and support infrastructure.

Prior to Oak Ridge, Bill was Laboratory Director of DOE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington. During his tenure, Bill focused PNNL's mission on environmental science and technology, enhanced the laboratory's productivity, and modernized its administrative systems.

Before leading the national laboratories at Richland and Oak Ridge, Bill managed Battelle's $800 million per year global environmental business. Earlier, as President of Battelle Technology International, Bill led Battelle's research, development, and applications efforts involving more than 4,100 staff at major facilities in Columbus, Ohio; Frankfurt, Germany; and Geneva, Switzerland. Bill also served as Laboratory Director of Battelle's Columbus Laboratories, managing a staff of 3,200.

Prior to these assignments, Bill was VP and General Manager of Battelle's Project Management Division, where he managed Battelle's systems engineering business.

Bill has been nominated for the National Medal of Technology. He received DOE's Gold Award as well as its Meritorious Service Award. Bill was named "Laboratory Director of the Year" in 1999 by the Federal Laboratory Consortium. He received the Warren Medal from the U.S. Government, the Sigma Xi Research Award in Chemistry and the U.S. Army's Commendation Medal for nuclear engineering education.

He has a B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Bill is married to the former Audrey Marie DeLaquil. They have three sons and currently reside in La Quinta, California.
