Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL or Livermore) is a Department of Energy national security laboratory with responsibility for ensuring that the nation's nuclear weapons remain safe, secure, and reliable. LLNL also works to prevent the spread and use of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction and to strengthen homeland security. The laboratory has capabilities in conventional defense, energy, environment, biosciences, and basic science. The University of California operates Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, on behalf of the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). LLNL employs over 8,000 people and has a budget of $1.7 billion. The largest part of that budget supports "stockpile stewardship" - the DOE program to maintain the safety, security, and reliability of the nation's nuclear weapons. LLNL's sponsors include - in decreasing order of support - the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the intelligence community, the National Institutes of Health, NASA, and others, including industry and other federal, state, and local agencies.
